“At 19 years old, I had already sung with the (New York) Philharmonic under the direction of Leonard Bernstein at Carnegie Hall and had also played a leading role in Broadway. However, I was terrorized at the idea of answering the telephone and was scared to take the elevator all alone. I was so scared about sleeping that I couldn’t fall asleep before seven in the morning.
